Electrophysiology of the tight junction. Tight junctions, located at the apical intercellular space between epithelial cells, form for a barrier to flux of ions and molecules. My major area of interest is to study the mechanisms by which tight junctions establish and regulate this barrier. This is being assessed using multiple approaches, including electrophysiological approaches such as voltage and current clamp techniques, paracellular flux studies, as well as novel, high resolution approaches to study tight junction function at the level of a single intercellular space.
