About James Vardiman

Dr. Vardiman started his long and distinguished career at the University of Chicago in 1973 as a fellow in Hematopathology under the mentorship of Dr. Henry Rappaport. Dr. Vardiman assumed the responsibilities as the director of Hematology laboratory and the section of hematopathology in 1975 and continued in that position for the next 38 years.

During this time, Dr. Vardiman has published close to 150 articles providing seminal contributions to identification of morphology of genetically defined myeloid malignancies. Dr. Vardiman has contributed to many books, as an editor and as an author. He has served as the secretary/treasurer, Vice President and the president of the society of Hematopathology. He served on the steering committee for the WHO classification of hematopoietic neoplasms and was an editor of the 3rd and 4th editions of the WHO monographs. He co-chaired the ASH-CAP committee on guidelines for evaluation of myeloid leukemia. He was awarded the Berard Dorfman award for a life time of contribution to the field of Hematopathology by the society for hematopathology this year.

Dr. Vardiman contributed to the training of many residents and fifteen fellows. The lecture was the brainchild of Dr. John Anastasi, the second fellow to graduate from the program. In addition to other sources, the lecture is funded by contributions from many of the former fellows.
