Surgical Pathology Fellowship

The University of Chicago Department of Pathology offers a one- or two-year fellowship in surgical pathology with opportunities for both clinical and translational research. The fellowship offers training in an academic, tertiary care center receiving 32,000 cases annually. The diagnostic material includes specimens from most fields of pathology with a relatively high proportion of gynecologic, bone & soft tissue, breast, urologic and head and neck cases. Large numbers of specimens are also received for consultation. (Separate surgical pathology fellowships are available with focus on ThoracicMedical RenalHead & NeckGastrointestinal & Hepatic).

The University of Chicago has a superb cancer center and has well established transplant programs in multiple organs. The fellow practices surgical pathology in an academic setting, participates in the daily diagnostic sign-out and handles a portion of consultation material. The fellow also presents cases at various clinicopathologic conferences and assumes some responsibility for teaching of residents and medical students. We offer an active basic scientific, translational and clinicopathologic research program. The optional second year of training may be devoted entirely to laboratory investigation. Research training is tailored to each fellow’s career goals.
