Chief Residents' Welcome

Dear prospective residents and fellows,

Welcome to the University of Chicago (UofC) Department of Pathology, and thank you for taking the time to learn more about our program! Situated in the beautiful Hyde Park neighborhood and within the historic UofC college campus, the UofC Medical Center is true to the motto “At the Forefront of Medicine.” Our department has a rich tradition of providing an engaging, academic experience with a diverse array of challenging cases and has a uniquely collegial, “open-door” atmosphere between trainees, attendings, and staff.

Residents take the lead throughout the department. From working up complex cases and communicating with our clinical colleagues on surgical pathology to running a robust apheresis service on blood bank, we have an exceptional degree of autonomy but also have readily accessible faculty support. Our outstanding, widely-published, and highly approachable faculty members lead a comprehensive anatomic and clinical pathology didactic series. Our faculty also provide limitless academic and research opportunities. Residents and fellows present frequently at local, national, and international conferences and publish in top-notch journals (and win a number of awards along the way). Lastly, there is a great deal of flexibility with elective blocks that can be tailored to individual trainee interests.

Our resident body is composed of a diverse set of uniquely skilled, dedicated, and humble colleagues who come together to define a socially and educationally engaging training experience. Graduates from our program consistently obtain competitive fellowship placements and go on to become leaders of pathology in both academic and community settings.

The City of Chicago provides a wonderful backdrop for our program with its vibrant culture, unique neighborhoods, extensively diverse cuisine, and many festivals, concerts, and professional sporting events. You’ll often find us out together enjoying the restaurant scene, running the Lakefront Trail, and exploring all that our city has to offer.

We would love to tell you more about our program, so please feel free to reach out to us or other members of our department. We also encourage you to follow our resident-run Twitter account (@UChicagoPath) to keep up with our academic activities and other events around our department. We look forward to seeing you in Chicago soon!

Sincerely,

Mike
