Chief Residents' Welcome

Dear prospective residents and fellows,

Welcome to the University of Chicago (UofC) Department of Pathology, and thank you for taking the time to learn more about our program! Situated in beautiful Hyde Park and on the beautiful UofC campus, the UofC Medical Center (UCMC) offers a great setting in which to train, providing exposure to a diverse array of challenging cases in consultations and in service to our local community. True to the UCMC mantra “At the Forefront of Medicine,” our department has a rich tradition of being at the forefront of pathology by providing an engaging, academic experience coupled with a uniquely collegial, “open-door” atmosphere between trainees, attendings, and staff.

Residents take the lead throughout the department and are afforded an exceptional degree of autonomy with faculty support always available, from working up complex cases and communicating with our clinical colleagues while on surgical pathology to running a robust apheresis service while in the blood bank. Our outstanding, widely-published, and highly approachable faculty members lead a comprehensive anatomic and clinical pathology didactic series based on input from the residents. The academic and research opportunities are limitless. Our fellow residents take advantage of ample research opportunities, presenting frequently at local, national, and international conferences, garnering a number of awards along the way, and publishing in top-notch journals. The program affords a great degree of flexibility to trainees with elective blocks that can be tailored to individual interests.

Our resident body is composed of a diverse set of uniquely skilled, dedicated, and humble colleagues who come together to define a socially and educationally engaging training experience. Thanks to the enrichment provided to us by our training at UofC, graduates from our program consistently obtain competitive fellowship placements and go on to become leaders of pathology in both academic and community settings.

The City of Chicago provides a wonderful backdrop for our program with its vibrant culture, unique neighborhoods, extensively diverse cuisine, and many festivals, concerts, and professional sporting events. You’ll often find us out together enjoying the restaurant scene, running the Lakefront Trail, and exploring all that our city has to offer.

We would love to tell you more about our program, so please feel free to reach out to us or other members of our department. We also encourage you to follow our resident-run Twitter account (@UChicagoPath) to keep up with our academic activities and other events around our department.   We look forward to seeing you in the Windy City soon!
